After initial evaluation, the three Engineering Programs of the University of Mindanao will be visited for the granting of Center of Development/Center of Excellence (COD/COE) by the Commission on Higher Education Technical Panel for Engineering, Technology and Architecture (CHED-TPETA) on September 25-26, 2008. After various screening and verification, the Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering have qualified for the final review and evaluation by the CHED Technical Panel. The team will evaluate the three programs based on four criteria—Instructional Quality, Research and Publication, Extension and Linkages and, Institutional Qualifications. The COD citation is the recognition granted by CHED to a particular academic program offered by higher education institutions(HEIs) which have demonstrated the highest degree or level of standards along the areas of instruction, research and publication, extension and linkages, and instructional qualifications. These academic programs have shown institutional leadership in all aspects of development and have capable of providing networking arrangements to other HEIs. To qualify for the COD, the program should attain an overall rating of 75% or better; all ratings in four areas are better than 50% ; and no critical deficiency. The Engineering Program is the first to use an electronic workbook with converted formulas and references with corresponding numerical values used by both the applicant institution and the technical panel for the initial assessment. The Technical Team to visit UM is headed by Engr. Carla Falconit with the following members: Civil Engineering: Dr. Ronaldo Gallardo and Engr. Peter LimComputer Engineering: Engr. Alexander Ybasco and Engr. Orlando MalacaElectrical Engineering: Engr. Edwardo Lindo and Engr. Lyndon BagueCHED: Nanda Calimlim, Violeta Estoya and Emerson Acosta Benefits of the COD include priority in the CHEDinstitutional partners, priority in the grants for developmental projects,faculty scholarships and research undertakings. UM has been one of theidentified CHED-COD in the past for its various engineering programs. Further,UM is the only institution in the region that qualifies for the latest Engineering-CODVisit. Its Business Administration, Computer Science and Information Technologyprograms were already granted COD by CHED. Its Electrical Engineering is thefirst in the Philippinesto be granted Level III accreditation by PACUCOA and will serve as a pilotschool for the Level IV instrument of PACUCOA. Its Civil Engineering has aLevel II Reaccreditation status while its Computer Engineering has an ApplicantStatus.
