Rough walls, bare ceiling, a bed and a couple of boxes– not exactly what one can call a house. Add in a couple with a 2-year old kid, and still, one can barely call it a home. That is precisely what came to mind when Davies saw the room extension of Mr. Bobby and Mrs. Luisa Soledad, the winners for Davies Home Makeover. The room was an extension of Mrs. Soledad's family house in Pasig but went unfinished because of insufficient funds. Luisa's brother, Michael Villegas, then entered their apartment-like room as a selection in the contest in hopes of helping his sister's family situation, concerned with their child Kael who suffers from asthma and had to live in a house that barely met the comfortable environment he needed. "I am not joining for myself but for my younger sister and her new family… I am not wishing for fancy stuff for their home. I just want them to have what they need so that Kael can grow up healthy. Of course, a fresh coat of Davies Paint will definitely be a very good start," wrote Villegas. Davies knew that a makeover in this situation was not a want but a necessity. The makeover began in May 2013, with Mr. Jocar Felix leading the Davies team as their Interior Designer. Mr. Felix, a 26-yr old student majoring in Interior Design at the Philippine School of Interior Design, also won the flipside of the tournament for designers and was selected by Davies with the modern design he entered. "I tried to keep it simple," said Felix. "'di ba sobrang liit nga ng space so I didn’t want it to be nakakasawa or nakaka-claustro. Ginawa kong maaliwalas." (I tried to keep it simple. There was very little space so I didn't want it to cause claustrophobia. I made it spacious and pleasant.) The feat, as it appears, didn't seem as easy as it sounds. The single room was very bare to begin with. Walls with exposed cement weren't ready to be painted, floors lacked tiling, the ceiling wasn’t finished and electrical lines were exposed. Balikbayan boxes served as cabinets and doors didn’t fit their frames as they were only spare wood donated by relatives. What originally started as a simple makeover became an unexpected finishing of a raw room construction. Adjustments were needed to be done in the design to overcome the challenge of having to squeeze the bedroom, living room, kitchen and dining room in one small space, and doing the complete makeover within a given budget. "We made the design mas simple, structure-wise. Dinagdagan na lang din ng Davies yung budget." (We made the design simpler, structure-wise. Davies also added to their budget.) After the makeover, however, the hard work and perseverance was well worth it. The new home brought new life to the family. Luisa Soledad elaborates that the results of the makeover exceeded their expectation and seemed to bring a "new dimension." The makeover definitely changed their ways and lifestyle as a family. "I think their life changed in a way that 'yung Davies kinuha ‘yung apartment nila (as winners). Naging mas comfortable yung environment nila," added Felix. "yung parents pagdating sa bahay nale-lessen yung stress nila sa everyday life kasi pag uwi nila maayos 'yung bahay, comfortable." (I think their life changed in a way that Davies chose their apartment as winners. Their environment became more comfortable; stress in their everyday life was lessened for the parents because the house is in order and comfortable.) The change most especially brought better life to the 2-year old Kael. "After 'nung makeover, ilang months na siya na hindi nagkakaroon ng asthma attacks. Dahil sa maayos na 'yung bahay, hindi na dusty, masigla na siya, hindi na siya nagkakasakit," quips Luisa. So kami may peace of mind na kami, hindi na kami nagwoworry," (After the makeover, many months followed that Kael did not have asthma attacks. Because the house is orderly and is not dusty anymore, he is no more experiencing illnesses. As for us, we got our peace of mind; we no longer worry.)
